GOVT-540 Democracy and Governance
Fall for 2010-2011
This aims to provide an introduction to the subjects of democracy, democracy
promotion, and the challenges of governance. It will begin with a discussion of democracy and regime types. We shall then examine the role that civil society and international factors play in the processes of transition and consolidation of
democracy as well as what are “best practices” in the areas of institutional design and electoral regimes. The last part of the course will consider the challenges of governance in the areas of state reform, the struggle against
corruption, and education.
