HIST-364 Revolutionary Thought in Islam

This course examines the history of revolutionary activity in Islam. It will focus on the interaction between the paradigm of the Prophet's example during the formative period of Islam, the Muslim debates on issues of peace, jihad, revolutionary change, government accountability and human responsibility for social, political and economic decay. It will study how these paradigms functioned in a variety of revolutionary movements in Islamic history including the Abbasids, Ikhwan al-Safa, the Fulani Jihad in Sub Saharan Africa, the Mahdi revolution in the Sudan, the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt, Hamas, Jihad Islami and Tahrir in Palestine and Hisbullah in Lebanon.
