HIST-462 History of Islam in Africa

This course examines the development of Muslim communities in Africa from the time of Muhammad to the present, with some emphasis given to the colonial and contemporary periods. All regions of Africa will be discussed, and noting the changes in the regional societies and their relationships over the centuries. The media and manners of expansion and conversion and the processes of developing Muslim social institutions will be studied. Course work will include a research paper and oral presentations.
