INAF-403 Islam and Politics in Southeast Asia

The relationship between Islam and politics in Southeast Asia is a multifaceted process with different patterns. The process is very much influenced by the link between the religion of Islam and its role in defining local Muslim ethnic identities and the contemporary demand, challenge and need for democratic pluralism. The three Muslim majority countries (Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei) and the seven Muslim minority countries (Thailand, Philippines, Myanmar, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos) are semi-secular in political character where religions play a crucial role in shaping local political cultures. This course will study the interaction between Islam and politics in Southeast Asia and its ramifications for future Southeast Asia in terms of domestic politics, interreligious and international relations.
