INAF-430 Islam in Africa
Fall for 2016-2017
This discussion-based seminar examines the history and practice of
Islam in Africa. Islam arrived in Africa over thirteen centuries ago.
Today the continent is home to over 400 million Muslims, making it a
key setting in which to analyze trends in Muslim religious life and
political organization. The course focuses on five themes: history,
education, law, religiosity, and politics. In addition to exploring
these themes, the course will strengthen your ability to work with
primary sources, ranging from medieval travel narratives to
contemporary polemics. Assignments will challenge you to hone your
writing abilities while learning about Muslim societies in Nigeria,
Algeria, Somalia, Kenya, South Africa, and elsewhere.
