Politics, War, and Smuggling in the Sahara: This course explores the history of the Sahara from the 1960s to the present, focusing on politics, war, and smuggling. We will discuss events such as the Tuareg-led uprisings in northern Mali, as well as the influence of Muammar Qadhafi on Saharan countries and the aftermath of his fall from power. Readings include travel narratives, fiction, and scholarship, and we will also watch several recent, award-winning films.
