KREN-406 Studies in Korean Thoughts and Religion

  • This course aims to search for the origin and development of Korean Thoughts and religion by first examining the three pillars of Korean Thoughts ‘????(hongiksasang, ????(gyeongcheonsasang)(‘Worship of Heaven’), and ?(hyo)(‘Filial Piety’). In order to study????, students will study Dangun(the Founder of Gojoseon), the Oldest Kingdom of Korea(2333B.C.-108B.C.) and the history of Gojoseon and for????which influenced Korean belief, students will examine Korean traditional religion (particularly national religion ’minjok-jonggyo’ in ca.1900) and shamanism which continues till today. As for ?, students will study figures who were exemplars of ? and legends and stories that reinforce ? up the first half of the 20th century.
    Then the course will be expanded to explore how this tradition has developed throughout the centuries by studying Korean history and culture and tracing back to the roots of the origins of Korean tradition to areas such as Mongolia and further north.
