LASP-502 Culture and Power

Curso orientado hacia el análisis y la interpretación de los principales temas de cultura y poder en América Latina desde la perspectiva de los trabajos de la memoria y las representaciones del pasado. A través de una revisión selectiva de crónicas, testimonios, artículos periodísticos, filmes documentales y textos de ficción y no-ficción, los estudiantes son invitados a reconocer y analizar los usos y abusos de la memoria en el cambio de siglo latinoamericano. Impartido en forma de seminario, el curso forma parte de la Cátedra de la Memoria, nacida del acuerdo entre CLAS, la Universidad Diego Portales y el Museo de la Memoria en Chile.
El curso será dictado en español y habrá un régimen de lecturas y ensayos críticos recomendados para seguir las sesiones de discusión. La participación activa de los alumnos en el seminario constituirá un 15% de la nota final. Los alumnos entregarán dos trabajos de informe a lo largo del curso, cada uno con una evaluación equivalente al 25% de la nota total, más un trabajo final con ponderación de 35%.

Explores the changing and contested constructions of identities and belief systems among the diverse peoples of Latin America. Emphasis is on the linked ways that power constitutes culture and that cultures construct powers. Focus on texts that may be literary, popular, oral, film, etc.

Culture and Power in Latin America

Latin American artists, intellectuals and activists, such as José Martí, Octavio Paz, Gabriela
Mistral and Pablo Neruda, among many others, developed distinct theoretical frameworks
with which they would understand and negotiate the region’s special geographic, political,
economic, linguistic, and cultural conditions. In this course we consider these frameworks that
reflect and engage significant debates regarding culture and power since the late nineteenth
century through the present day. We examine a range of linguistic and visual forms, including
narrative, poetry, documentary film, visual art, and performance, that emphasize innovative
aesthetic techniques as a way to engage political and cultural hegemonies. To supplement our
readings, we dialogue over Skype or in person with contemporary artists and activists as well
as attend representations of Latin American and Latino culture in Washington, DC.
