LASP 513: Research topics in Latin American Political Economy: China’s Influence on Latin America

Description of the Course
China’s influence on Latin America has grown exponentially in the past decade and a half. China has emerged as the principal source of imports, and a major export destination for several countries as well as a rapidly emerging investor. China’s economic impact on the Latin American region has been uneven. China’s rapid industrialization and high growth rate underlie a voracious appetite for commodities, and strong demand from China and its Asian supply chain partners has led to a significant increase in the prices of many commodities exported by Latin American countries. As a result, the terms of trade have significantly improved for several South American countries, with the greatest beneficiaries those exporting petroleum and minerals and some food products. On the other side are the non-commodity exporters, which have not benefited from China’s terms of trade boost. To the contrary, Mexico and the Central American countries, whose primary exports are manufactured products and textiles and apparel that directly compete with China, have seen neutral or negative effects from China’s rise.
This course will examine the growing literature on China’s impact on Latin America, focusing on the economic but also looking at the political, societal and security aspects. The course will be carried out as a seminar, which will require active participation. Students will be expected to engage in analytical exploration, serve as class discussion leaders, and carry out and present an in-depth research project.

LASP-513-01 Current Topics in LA Pol Econ
Fall for 2017-2018
The purpose of this research seminar is to provide an opportunity for CLAS students interested in Political Economy to gain a more in-depth understanding of selected topics covered in the introductory PE course, LASP 504 and to build and practice valuable research skills.

The course will be divided into three sessions of four weeks each, during which we will cover a broad topic in depth. We will meet for two lecture sessions to cover the substance of the issue and review the relevant contemporary issues, then students will prepare a research paper to be presented in class on the fifth class. Intermediate classes will be used for bilateral consultations with the professor. Students will serve as peer reviewers for each other.
