LING-154 Linguistics and Reading
Spring for 2009-2010
This theoretical and practical course provides an in-depth investigation to the application of linguistics and reading instruction. Among the topics addressed are: processing strategies and their interactions; the influences of orthographic systems, phonology, and morphology on English literacy practices; an investigation of writing systems of English and other languages; the role of listening and reading; different approaches to phonics instruction; an investigation of an analytical reading inventory, including word lists, miscue analyses, fluency, and multi-leveled comprehension questions; and formal and informal reading assessments. The course is designed to allow the student to gather data, analyze data, and develop a draft of a case study by the end of the semester.
