LING-283 Language and Society
Spring for 2010-2011
Faculty:
  • Fasold, Ralph
  • Language and Society is an overview of topics about language in use; in other words, it is about what happens when people talk to each other, and about the interaction of whole languages in their broader social settings. We will take the point of view of linguistics, that is, that language is an observed phenomenon. This means that any linguistic variety, no matter how far from grammar-book standards, and any usage pattern, no matter how rude it may seem at first encounter, gets treated just as seriously as more elegant-sounding language.
