LING-443 Sanskrit

It is a course for the beginners with no prior knowledge of Sanskrit. It consists of readings (from classical and Vedic) and discussions of its relationship with Greek, Latin, and other classical Indo-European languages. The course can be used to fulfill the language requirement for students in linguistics.
1. Introduction to language and its relationship with other IE languages.
2. The Devanagari Alphabet
3. A brief survey of its grammar
4. Readings:
a. passages from the Mahabharata
b. selections from the Hitopadesha
c. selections from the Rigveda

Note: The final grade for the course is determined on the basis of the classroom reading skill and a final paper which include some translation and interpretation of short texts.
