LING-494 Task-based Language Learning and Teaching

Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) is an educational framework for the theory and practice of teaching language. It has been influenced by philosophy of education, theories of second language acquisition, empirical findings on effective instructional techniques, and the exigencies of language learning in contemporary society. Since its origins in the literature in the 1980s (though emerging from earlier ideas), TBLT has evolved from a handful of pedagogic principles and ‘methods’ to a broad-based foundation for the implementation of full-scale language programs. Though there is broad interest in the potential value of TBLT to foster worthwhile language teaching and learning, there is also considerable diversity in the theoretical scope, applied practice, and research that corresponds with the TBLT name.

This course reviews issues at the core of TBLT. Following a brief introduction to the history and origins of TBLT, we will explore applied research and practice in TBLT, covering the topics of needs analysis, curriculum, instruction, task design, teachers, learners, assessment, and program evaluation.

We will read a collection of classic and recent texts discussing the TBLT framework. Students will carry out a semester long project that will be research- or teaching-focused, according to their interests and needs.
