LING-511 Phonetics and Phonology II

This course continues the introduction to phonetics and phonology begun in Ling 510. The four topic areas introduced in 510 are explored in greater depth in 511. These are:
1. Articulatory phonetics (how speech sounds are made)
2. Acoustic phonetics (how sound travels and how sound is measured)
3. Segmental phonology (how sounds contrast and alternate)
4. Suprasegmental phonology (prosody, tone, and stress)
Students will complete transcription assignments for every class, weekly homework assignments that reinforce concepts and skills, two reading reports that will introduce students to the primary literature in this area, and one final project that will allow students to demonstrate analytical skills in both phonology and phonetics. At the end of the class, students will have acquired the skills necessary to:
1. Understand the major points of current phonological and phonetic theories
2. Follow a talk on phonology or phonetics with critical understanding
3. Record, transcribe, and analyze speech for their own linguistic investigations
4. Be prepared to move on to more advanced courses that focus on current theoretical problems and research
