LING-539 Pragmatics Across Languages

Broadly speaking, pragmatics is the study of the relationship between an utterance, its meaning, and the context in which it is produced. This graduate-level course introduces students to key concepts in pragmatics, including topics in cross-cultural pragmatics (i.e., how pragmatic knowledge and performance differ across languages and cultures) and pragmatic development (i.e., how language learners acquire pragmatic competence). Students will become familiar with appropriate data collection techniques, learn to analyze spoken and written data, and apply this knowledge to language learning and teaching.
