LING-564 Computational Grammar Formalisms
Spring for 2011-2012
This course will focus both on nonderivational theories of syntax and semantics applications to computational linguistics, and on using software to analyze syntactic structure. On the formal side, we will examine Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG), and related lexicalist approaches to syntax. On the practical side, we will use parsers based on HPSG, as well as others that incorporate probabilistic methods to cope with ambiguity. The course will provide opportunities to test these parsers and examine human and machine linguistic analyses based on them. Although no programming knowledge is required, some level of comfort and patience with software is.
Prerequisite: Generative Syntax I, or Introduction to NLP, or permission of instructor
