LING-590 Advanced Statistics

This course explores the application of advanced statistical procedures for the analysis of various language-related phenomena, with a particular focus on language learning, teaching, and testing data. The course assumes familiarity with basic statistical procedures (e.g., correlation, comparing means) as well as facility with graphic and tabular presentation of data. Building from these foundations, the course introduces approaches to factorial and multivariate analysis, including: regression models, factor analysis, MANOVA, discriminant function analysis, and others. Emphasis is placed on the logical and accurate interpretation of analyses in relation to research designs, measurement and error (e.g., reliability) characteristics of the data, and interpretable reporting of statistical findings (e.g., using effect sizes and confidence intervals, effective data visualization techniques). Additional topics may also be addressed based on students’ interests. The principle assignment for this course will involve carrying out a research project involving quantitative data analysis.
