LSHV-372 Critiques of Religion

LSHV-372 Critiques of Religion
Fall only
Faculty:
  • Gillis, Chester
  • The question of the existence or non-existence of a transcendent being has been debated for centuries in Western culture. Until the post-Enlightenment period, the question was generally resolved in favor of God’s existence. However, the post-Enlightenment period produced a number of thinkers who offered penetrating criticisms of religious belief. These criticisms have been responded to by modern and contemporary theologians and philosophers of religion. This course will examine the history of the debate about the truth claims and value of religious beliefs from the Medieval period to the present. (If you have taken The Problem of God in the Theology Department, do not register for this course.)
