MAAS-533-01 Refugees & Migrants to and from the Arab World
Spring for 2008-2009
Faculty:
This course will explore in detail four refugee situations in the Arab world in the 20th and 21st century: Palestine, Iraq, Sudan, and Somalia. The beginning of the course will focus on the critical scholarship on refugee movements, development/aid, violence, war, resistance, borders, and citizenship, which will be themes used to examine the four case studies. Based largely in anthropological studies of refugee movements, the course will concern itself with the impact to social and family life, identity, and people's sense of place and nation in the context of war and displacement.
