MARK-616 Social Enterprise
Spring for 2009-2010
This module explores approaches taken by the business and nonprofit sectors to address social problems around the world. It examines the potential roles for businesses in civil society beyond providing profits and jobs, and it considers the role of the nonprofit sector and the unique issues of managing in this sector. It also considers cross-sector collaborations and the special challenges inherent in seeking effectiveness and efficiency in such enterprises.
An underlying premise of this course is that most students in the class will, at some point in their careers, have the interest and/or opportunity to work on social issues either within a business or as a board member, volunteer, or staff leader of a nonprofit organization. The course enables students to both examine the applicability of for-profit business approaches to social challenges and to expand their knowledge of effective management practices in the complex environment in which nonprofits operate. As a result, students should become better prepared to achieve social objectives as leaders in business, the social sector, or the public sector.
By means of cases, guest speakers, and discussions, the course will address such issues as social entrepreneurship, capacity building, managing multi-site organizations, capital markets for social enterprises, business-nonprofit partnerships, branding, social marketing, performance measurement, nonprofit governance and venture philanthropy.
