MSFS-714 Workshop: Practice of Diplomacy

This workshop is designed to develop skills in the practice of diplomacy on a variety of contemporary foreign policy issues drawn from the political and economic fields. The focus will be on the interaction of policy development with policy execution from the perspective of a practitioner in the Washington inter-agency process and in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy. The role of Congress, NGOs, interest groups, the media, and the public in diplomatic practice will be explored through class exercises and out-of-classroom contacts with these groups as well as experience on the practice of diplomacy by embassies and missions. The writing of short memoranda and oral presentations will be stressed to assure that students are well prepared for successful careers in diplomacy.
