MUSC-114 Musical Culture: European Tradition
Spring only
This course investigates the history of Western European art music beginning with a discussion of the Baroque Era (ca. 1600) and continuing until the early modern period (ca. 1945). The study of contemporary European society, culture, and parallel artistic trends will serve as the context for the creation, content, and style of music examined in this course. MUSC 114 will focus on the analysis of select compositions (by artists such as J.S. Bach, Corelli, Vivaldi, Pergolesi, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Berlioz, Liszt, Brahms, Mahler, Schoenberg and Stravinsky among others) to achieve a practical and historical understanding of Western Classical music styles and genres.
