PBIO-531 Physiologic Basis of Mind-Body Medicine

This course provides students with an understanding of the scientific basis for the mutual regulatory relationships that exist between the mind/brain and other components of the body. Particular emphasis is placed on the study of the bidirectional communication that takes place between the
central nervous system, the endocrine system, and the immune system. This field, sometimes referred to as Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) or
Neuroendocrinimmunology, is used to explain how chronic stress drives the development of many common chronic diseases. This material also
aids in an understanding of how the practice of mind-body skills alters the pathophysiology associated with stress and disease.
