PHIL-161 Political Philosophy

This course will be concerned to treat three central questions of political philosophy: the nature of distributive justice, the source and limits of political authority, and the justification and implementation of democratic ideals. We will read John Rawls's A Theory of Justice (selections), A. John Simmons's Moral Principles and Political Obligations, and Thomas Christiano's The Rule of the Many, along with various other texts that will be made available as handouts or on-line. Course requirements will include prepared, active attendance and several papers. (Not offered 2004-05)
