Faculty:
This course is planed as an introduction to Brazilian, Portuguese and Lusophone African film. The first part of the class will focus on the development of cinema in Brazil, particularly from Cinema Novo onwards. Films will be discussed in light of earlier developments in the Brazilian film industry and of political and social changes in the country. In the second part of the course we will concentrate on Portuguese film production, from the early movies produced under the New State regime to the post-1974 film production. Finally, we will turn to movies from Lusophone Africa and briefly comment the development of the film industry in African Portuguese-speaking countries. A special attention will be paid to documentary film, which has been one of the most vibrant areas of film production in the Portuguese-speaking world during the last decade.
