Through the world into the imagined future – A journey of discovery with José Saramago

José Saramago, Nobel prize for Literature in 1998, became well known worldwide for the ways in which, in his novels, themes and issues of (Portuguese) society become existential questions of (universal) human life.
We will approach Saramago’s fiction as a journey of discovery – a journey into the interconnections and inter-textualities of historical past, contemporary society and imagined future, inner and outer world, local and global.
Baltasar and Blimunda, The year of the death of Ricardo Reis, The stone raft, and other novels will be our primary texts (in their entirety and in excerpts).
