SEST-525 U.S. Nuclear Policy
Nolan and Payne
This course examines the theories of deterrence and coercion underlying U.S. nuclear policy, the evolution of U.S policy, and the relationship of U.S. nuclear policy to arms control policy. The course analyzes Cold War developments in U.S. nuclear strategy and strategic arms control, including pertinent developments in Russian nuclear strategy and arms control policy. Examining post-Cold War nuclear issues, it focuses in particular on how a dramatically changed and dynamic international environment affects the basic Cold War precepts underlying past policies, and the new directions in U.S. nuclear strategy, arms control, and force requirements that have been proposed in response to these changes. The course concludes with an examination of the moral issues associated with nuclear weapons and strategy.
