SOCI-230 Family Interaction
Spring only
Although this course necessarily includes a careful consideration of broad social trends and influences on families, a major emphasis is placed on family dynamics among family members in at least three generations of the same families. We also examine the effectiveness of conceptualizing families as relatively closed social systems with repeated patterns of behavior in the context of varied social classes, races, ethnic groups, and sexual orientations. Frames of reference used for readings, class discussions, and research are based largely on Murray Bowen's family systems theory and sociological perspectives.
