SPAN-237 Cultural History of Spanish Painting
Spring for 2014-2015
Faculty:
  • Zarate, Marla
  • In this course, we will study works by the most famous painters in the history of Spanish art: El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Picasso, Dalí, Miró, among others, as well as contemporary painters such as López García and Barceló. But our objective will be to go beyond knowledge of the peculiarities or style of each artist. We will seek to relate the images represented in the paintings to Spanish culture of the various periods, identify their prevailing values and ideas, and discover what the painters have to teach us about Spain and its contributions to Western civilization.

No previous study of art history required.
