SPAN-497 Poetry & Visual Arts in Latin America
Faculty:
Beginning with the work of Rubén Darío and the art currents of fin de siglo, this course will study poetry in the context of both aesthetic and social currents. Poets studied will include: Darío, César Vallejo, Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Jorge Luis Borges, Alfonsina Storni, Nicolás Guillén, Octavio Paz, Alejandra Pizarnik, and more recent poetry. We will examine artistic manifestations of the twentieth century, including art nouveau, art deco, Mexican muralism, vanguard movements, indigenism, and the works of individual artists such as Tarsila do Amaral, Xul Solar, Wifredo Lam, Roberto Matta, Sebastiao Salgado, Alfredo Jaar, among others.
