Plagues are embedded in human history, shaping demographics and understandings of human landscapes. In this senior seminar we will examine epidemics from a social scientific perspective and explore the intersection of peoples, plagues, and the technologies they use to alleviate suffering. We will examine a range of issues that question how plagues come to be, how and why they afflict certain populations, and what people do to mitigate both social and biological repercussions of epidemics and pandemics. Some relevant questions include: Why do epidemics occur? What are the political-economic and social factors that put certain populations at risk? Why do some epidemics get extensive media attention, while others that kill many more people remain invisible? By looking for answers to a range of questions like these and looking in depth at one question of personal interest to you, you will develop a solid foundation in global health understanding and the skills to think critically about health as one of the most pressing global issues.

Learning Goals
At the end of this course, students who attend all classes, complete all the required readings, and participate in class fully should:
1) Consider the role of epidemics in shaping how people move, interact, and think;
2) Recognize that epidemics can be highly politicized or more marginalized depending on who they afflict (e.g., who dies);
3) Describe how social and political factors shape epidemics and the technologies developed to mitigate them;
Understand the role of medical technologies to curb epidemic diseases.
