THEO-053 Religion and Aesthetics
Professor Cho
The boundaries between religion and art are explored through two primary definitions: as the experience of the ordinary and as the experience of horror. The first definition will be considered in the context of Zen Buddhism and Eastern modern art. The second will be examined through the theology of Rudolf Otto and the modern horror novel/film genre. The course is anchored by a theoretical concern regarding the nature of religious experience and its supposed autonomy.
