Fall for 2011-2012
No faculty information available
What is the relationship between politics and theology? This course invites students to explore and to consider a variety of responses to the question of the relationship between "church and state.” Materials are drawn from a range of disciplines, from revealed religion and theology to philosophy, political science and law. Selected readings include excerpts from the Gospels, Plato, Aquinas, Maimonides, Farabi, Hobbes, Spinoza, Schmitt, Strauss, liberation theology and Supreme Court rulings. Emphasis will be given to introducing students to short, key passages from these sources, in a way that will be accessible for discussion without prior background.
