THEO-550 Concepts of Culture/Religious Implications

This course considers recent use of the category of culture in both theology and the study of religion. It will survey both influential theories of culture and their use by scholars of religion and theology. Specific topics include: the emergence of "religion" as a distinct category, the debates concerning secularization and modernity, and the cultural aspects of contemporary religious responses to globalization.
