TURK-351 Introduction to Turkish Culture

"In Search of Turkish Daily Life" is the sub-title of this 3 credit seminar course which uses a wide range of genres (written in translated to English) to examine Turkish culture. Readings in history, ethnography, fiction, memoirs, travel writing, and folk literature are used. Although the course begins with the Central Asian heritage of the Turkic peoples, its emphasis lies on the cultural politics of the Modern Republic of Turkey, covering topics such as modernization, secularization, identity formation, migration, East-West relations, gender, and cultural production.
